How much does a Beni Ourain rug cost?
Online, two rugs called “Beni Ourain” in the same size can differ in price many times over. The difference is rarely the name: it is the way the rug is made, the size and what is included in the price. Here are our own prices, size by size, and the questions to ask before comparing.

What makes the price of a hand-knotted rug
- The size: every square foot is knotted by hand, knot by knot, so the price follows the surface
- The time: each rug is made to order and takes several weeks of work before it ships
- The wool: thick natural sheep wool, used for both the pile and the knots
- What is included: with us, shipping is free and, for the US, import duties are included in the price you pay
Why some “Beni Ourain” rugs cost much less
The name is used today for rugs that are not knotted by hand. A tufted rug is made with a tufting gun through a canvas and glued to a backing; a machine-made rug is woven on a power loom, often in synthetic fiber. They can look similar in a photo and cost a fraction of the price, but they are a different product and usually do not last as long.
Our guide on how to tell an authentic Beni Ourain explains the checks to make: the back of the rug, the fringes, the wool.
How to compare two offers
- Compare the price per square foot, not the price of two rugs of different sizes
- Check how the rug is made: hand-knotted, hand-tufted or machine-made
- Check the material declared: 100% wool, a wool blend or synthetic
- Check what is included: shipping, import duties and taxes for your country
- Check the making time: a rug made to order takes weeks, a rug in stock ships at once

Questions
Why is a hand-knotted Beni Ourain rug expensive?
Because it is knotted by hand, knot by knot, in natural wool, and each rug takes several weeks of work. The price follows the size: compare the price per square foot.
Are import duties included for the US?
Yes. For delivery to the United States, the price you pay on Etsy includes import duties, and shipping is free.
Is a cheap Beni Ourain rug a fake?
Not always a fake, but often a different product: tufted or machine-made, sometimes in synthetic fiber. Ask the seller how the rug is made and for a photo of the back.
How much does a custom size cost?
It depends on the size and the design. Send us your project and we reply with the price and the making time.
