Guide
What size rug do I need? Moroccan rug size guide
The most common mistake is a rug that is too small: it floats in the middle of the room and makes the space look smaller. A few simple rules, and the table of our sizes in centimetres and feet, help you choose right the first time.
Living room
The rug should connect the furniture. At least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs should rest on it.
- Small living room, in front of a two-seater sofa: 150 x 200 cm (4'11" x 6'7", close to 5x7 ft)
- Standard living room with a three-seater sofa: 200 x 300 cm (6'7" x 9'10", close to 6x9 ft)
- Large living room or corner sofa: 250 x 300 cm (8'2" x 9'10", close to 8x10 ft) or 250 x 350 cm (8'2" x 11'6")
- Open-plan space where all the furniture sits on the rug: 300 x 500 cm (9'10" x 16'5") or 400 x 500 cm (13'1" x 16'5")
Leave about 30 to 60 cm (1 to 2 ft) of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
Bedroom
The rug usually goes under the lower two-thirds of the bed and extends 50 to 60 cm (about 2 ft) on each side, so your feet land on wool in the morning.
- Double bed (140 cm wide): 200 x 300 cm (6'7" x 9'10")
- Queen bed (152 cm / 60 in wide): 250 x 300 cm (8'2" x 9'10", close to 8x10 ft)
- King bed (180 to 193 cm / 72 to 76 in wide): 250 x 350 cm (8'2" x 11'6")
- Beside the bed only: two small rugs of 80 x 100 cm (2'7" x 3'3") or a runner
Dining room
Chairs must stay on the rug when they are pulled out. Add about 60 to 75 cm (2 to 2.5 ft) to each side of the table.
- Table for 4 (about 120 x 80 cm): 200 x 300 cm (6'7" x 9'10")
- Table for 6 (about 180 x 90 cm): 250 x 350 cm (8'2" x 11'6")
A lower pile is easier to move chairs on: see our guide on Beni Ourain and Azilal rugs.
Hallway and entryway
Leave 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) of floor on each side of a runner, and keep it clear of the swing of the door.
- Entryway: 80 x 100 cm (2'7" x 3'3") or 100 x 150 cm (3'3" x 4'11")
- Long hallway: a runner, or a custom length on request

Two tips before you order
- Mark the outline of the rug on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day
- A hand-knotted rug can differ by a few centimetres from the size announced: that is part of handmade work
Questions
Is a 200 x 300 cm rug the same as a 6x9 ft rug?
Almost: 200 x 300 cm is 6'7" x 9'10", slightly larger than 6 x 9 ft (183 x 274 cm). It fits the same rooms.
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
250 x 300 cm (8'2" x 9'10", close to 8x10 ft) lets the rug extend about 50 cm on each side of a queen bed.
Can I order a size that is not in the list?
Yes. Send a message through Etsy with the size you need: custom sizes are possible.
