How to stuff a Moroccan leather pouf
Moroccan leather poufs are sold unstuffed: shipped empty, they take far less space, so shipping costs much less. Filling one is easy, and the result depends on one thing: packing it much more tightly than you think.
What to fill it with
- Old clothes, towels, sheets and blankets: free, heavy and firm, the most traditional filling
- Polyester fibrefill (sold for cushions): light and soft, but it needs a lot to get firm
- Shredded foam or foam pieces: firm and light, a good mix with textiles
- A cushion or pillow insert in the centre, with textiles packed all around it: a quick way to start
Avoid bean-bag beads alone: they move and the pouf loses its shape.
Step by step
- Open the pouf through the opening on its base
- Tip: put an old duvet cover or pillowcase inside first, then fill that. You can take the filling out in one piece later
- Fill the edges and corners first (on a square pouf, push hard into each corner), then the centre
- Press down, sit on it, and add more. Repeat until it no longer gives way
- Close the pouf and shape it with your hands. It settles in the first days: add a little more if needed
How much filling?
More than you expect. A pouf that looks full but sinks when you sit on it needs more. Firmness, not looks, is the test. Larger poufs take a lot: plan a mix of foam or a cushion insert in the centre with textiles around it.
Caring for the leather
- Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth
- Nourish the leather from time to time with a leather balm
- Keep it away from direct heat and strong sun
- Natural leather has a smell when new. It fades in a few days in a ventilated room
Questions
Why are Moroccan poufs sold unstuffed?
To keep shipping costs low: an empty pouf folds flat, a stuffed one ships as a large, light parcel that costs much more.
Can I use my pouf as a seat?
Yes, once it is packed very firmly. Textiles or foam give a firm seat; fibrefill alone stays soft and works better as a footrest.
Can I wash the leather?
No. Wipe it with a damp cloth and use a leather balm. Do not soak it or put it in a washing machine.
